Biotechnology, the technology harnessing cellular and bio-molecular processes to develop procedures and products, has amalgamated biology and technology. It has the fundamental aim to improve the quality of life. Today Biotechnology finds its wide applications and has potential impact on virtually all domains of human welfare; hence the scenario of Biotechnology in the world is changing rapidly and dynamically. Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary subject, resting on its diverse opportunities, Department of Biotechnology, University of Engineering & Management, Kolkata has framed the departmental syllabus and the curriculum to produce technically skilled engineers to compete with the growing pace worldwide.

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)

• PEO 1: The program ensures that students have a strong foundation in the principles and practices of Biotechnology, along with knowledge of science and mathematics.
• PEO 2: The program will empower students with application-oriented domain knowledge and skills, enabling them to emerge as capable and competent biotechnologists on a global scale.
• PEO 3: The students will develop the ability to identify and analyze diverse biotechnology-related problems, employing lifelong learning and professional growth to devise sustainable solutions.
• PEO 4: The students will be nurtured and developed as responsible engineers by inculcating values, ethics, integrity, leadership, and social responsibility.

Undergraduate

B.Tech, UG program offered by the University is focused exclusively in bridging the concept of Biology in the technological field. The syllabus has been designed to create interdisciplinary educational experience to enhance the knowledge base and skill sets of the students. This will help them to be better employable by developing problem solving skills. The curriculum gets updated based on the industry requirements. The highlight of the curriculum is the hands-on experience that the students gain through in-plant training, projects and educational tours.

Research

The Laboratory of the Department of Biotechnology is well equipped with latest instruments to comply with research requirements. Research in the department is coordinated with faculty members where the students are directly and actively involved in projects and gain their knowledge of research through discussion with their mentors. Every year department organizes International Conference on Biotechnology & Biological Sciences, BIOSPECTRUM, where the students get exposure to interact with the industrialists, researchers & professors PAN India and abroad. The students undergoing the program is encouraged to publish their research find-outs in journals of National and International reputes.

Industry connection

Department organizes talk sessions on a regular basis by industry experts for the students to interact with the industry personals. Department works in close association with the corporate relations cell of the university regarding the placement of the students. Industrial training & industry visits are part of curriculum.
