The importance of trees in purifying the air, as natural resources, maintaining the ecological balance, preventing soil erosion, as medicines, habitats for faunal species, providing nutrients to the soil etc. is well known. Thus, understanding the importance of trees in our nature, Tree Plantation program was held at the University of Engineering & Management (UEM), Kolkata. Trees were planted by - 1) Shri G. K. Pillai, IAS, Chancellor, UEM Jaipur, Former Union Home Secretary, Govt of India, Member, Board of Directors, TATA International. 2) Prof Dr Basudeb Barman, Former Vice-Chancellor, Kalyani University. 3) Prof Dr Satyajit Chakrabarti, Chancellor, UEM Kolkata. 4) Shri Amit Kiran Deb, IAS, Former Chief Secretary, Govt of West Bengal. 5) Prof Dr T. K. Nath, Former Chairperson, AICTE.  

Baja SAE consists of competitions that simulate real-world engineering design projects and their related challenges. Engineering students are tasked to design and build an off-road vehicle that will survive the severe punishment of rough terrain. Each team's goal is to design and build a single-seat, all-terrain, sporting vehicle whose structure contains the driver. The vehicle is to be a prototype for a reliable, maintainable, ergonomic, and economic production vehicle which serves a recreational user market. The students of University of Engineering & Management (UEM), Jaipur have developed a car and have been selected to represent India in the final round of International Baja SAE moto-sports competition.

UEM Kolkata students' performances in NPTEL examinations in September-October cycle have been ranked no. 1 in whole India. Around 4 lacs registrations were there in that cycle. IEM has ranked 4th in pan India. CONGRATULATIONS !!! to our students. NPTEL stands for National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning which is an initiative by seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) for creating course contents in engineering and science. A proposal was jointly put forward by five IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur and Madras) and IISc for creating contents for 100 courses as web based supplements and 100 complete video courses, for forty hours of duration per course. Web supplements were expected to cover materials that could be delivered in approximately forty hours. Five engineering branches (Civil, Computer Science, Electrical, Electronics and Communication and Mechanical) and core science programmes that all engineering students are required to take in their undergraduate engineering programme in India were chosen initially. Contents for the above courses were based on the model curriculum suggested by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the syllabi of major affiliating Universities in India.

Dr. Goutam Chattopadhyay, Senior Research Scientist (SRS) at the NASA-Jet Propulsion Laboratory, USA presented with a token of appreciation after his address. Goutam Chattopadhyay is currently a Senior Research Scientist (SRS) at the NASA-Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA, USA, and a Visiting Associate at the Division of Physics, Mathematics, and Astronomy, California Institute of Technology.
