Eligibility

A candidate shall be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. programme, if he/she possesses: A Master’s degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC’s 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever the grading system is followed), or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorised by an authority. A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for the candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC /Differently-abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the University Grants Commission from time to time, or for those who had obtained their Master’s degree prior to 19th September, 1991. The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever the grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible only on the basis of the qualifying marks without including the grace mark procedures. Candidates with BE/BTech degree or equivalent with excellent academic record (minimum CGPA of 9.00 on 10 point scale or 80% marks in aggregate) may be considered for admission. Relaxation in CGPA to 7.00 on a 10-point scale or in marks to 65% for the minimum eligibility conditions may be permitted for candidates with a BE / BTech degree or equivalent who have a minimum of 3 years of professional and/or research experience in the area in which the admission is sought. However, candidates admitted with BE/BTech or equivalent qualification will be admitted for PhD after successful completion of eight Masters level courses as suggested by the PhD Admission Committee of concerned Department/School, within a period of two years from the date of admission. A minimum CGPA of 6.00 on a 10-point scale should be earned in the courses prescribed by the concerned Department/School. The candidates who have qualified the UGC/CSIR-JRF/NET/SLET, or are Teacher Fellowship-holders or have passed M. Phil. programme with course work recognised by the U.G.C., as per the UGC Regulations (Minimum Standards and Procedure for award of M.Phil./Ph.D. Degree, 2009), shall be exempted from appearing at the written test.

Direct Admission:

  • The University shall conduct an Entrance Test with qualifying marks as 50% (a relaxation of 5% of marks to be allowed for those belonging to the SC/ST/OBC/ Differently-abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time). Ph.D. program at the University of Engineering & Management is offered in two modes- Full time and Part time (not distance learning). Coursework on Research Methodology and Computer Applications are mandatory. Other credits on coursework are choice based. A Full-time Ph.D. scholar shall mean a candidate devoting full time for completing the requirements of the program and should not be employed in any other organization or should not be a student in any other course anywhere, and a part- time Ph.D. scholar shall mean a candidate who is devoting a part of his time towards the pursuit of the program while discharging his official/employment obligations anywhere. Ph.D. program is for minimum 3 years. Maximum duration is 8 years. UEM encourages co-guide from other organizations but there must be an internal guide, and the internal guide must be the main guide.

Duration of Ph.D. Programme

Full Time PhD Programme Full Time PhD Programme The Full Time Ph.D. programme shall be for a minimum duration of three years, including course work and a maximum of six years. The women candidates and Persons with Disability (more than 40% disability) may be allowed a relaxation of two years for the Ph.D. in the maximum duration. In addition, the women candidates may be provided Maternity Leave/Child-Care Leave once in the entire duration of the Ph.D. programme for up to 240 days. In case of exceptional circumstances like, but not limited to, illness/hospitalization, etc. the Vice-Chancellor may grant extension initially for a period of six months, but not exceeding a total of one year, in addition to the maximum duration of the programme.
Part Time PhD Programme A student must submit his thesis within ten semesters (excluding summer terms) to be counted from the semester next to passing the qualifying examination. If the student fails to submit his thesis within stipulated period he may request the respective DRC for extension of time. Such extensions for submission of thesis are limited to a maximum of four semesters. Thus, the duration for submitting final thesis (including all extensions and semester withdrawals) are limited to 14 semesters. If a candidate fails to submit his/her final thesis during this period, he/she will be discontinued from the programme. The female candidates who have availed maternity leave during this period may be given one extra semester for thesis submission.

Vision

We believe that research should be aligned with the society so that it affects the society in some ways. Following the successful completion of the evaluation process and before the announcement of the award of the Ph.D. degree, the University shall submit an electronic copy of the Ph. D. thesis to the INFLIBNET for hosting the same so as to make it accessible to all Institutions/Colleges. Prior to the actual award of the degree, the University shall issue a provisional Certificate to the effect that the Degree has been awarded in accordance with the provisions of UGC Regulations, 2016.
Note: Notwithstanding what is contained in the Ordinance, the Academic Council or the Vice Chancellor may, in exceptional circumstances and on the recommendations of the Board of Studies, as well as on the merits of each individual case, consider, at its discretion and for the reasons to be recorded in writing, relaxation of any of the provisions except those related to CGPA requirements for qualifying the course work.
